Order for the Blessing on the Fifteenth Birthday (Quinceañera)
Among several Spanish-speaking countries and peoples in the United States there is the beautiful and meaningful custom of celebrating the transition from a girl’s childhood to young womanhood with a ritual that expresses thanksgiving to God for the gift of life and that asks for a blessing from God for the years ahead. This celebration may take place within Mass or outside of Mass. At St. Dorothy’s, the rite of blessing is received from the pastor or deacon only outside of Mass.
For centuries, Catholics have looked to the virtue of modesty as it applies to what one wears in order to judge what is appropriate. God has made the human body beautiful. Immodest attire neither contributes to the promotion of the human person nor to the establishing of the Kingdom and therefore cannot be permitted from anyone attending the celebration. Families interested in hosting a Quinceañera at the parish are encouraged to contact the church office to discuss requirements, available dates, and how to prepare.
